Apatchy Warriors Triumph Again!

16th August 2017

A team of 13 'Apatchy Warriors' took on Total Warrior’s gruelling 10k obstacle course, facing mud, ice, fire, heights and electric shocks, to mark International Alopecia Day 2017 and raise awareness of alopecia.

This is the second year that Alopecia UK has put together a team for this event and we even had some repeat warriors - talk about a glutton for punishment!

The team included Alopecia UK’s Support and Events Manager, Jen Chambers, our London support group leader Amy Harmsworth, our Surrey & Greater London support group leader Elaine Cottrell, our ex Chair of Trustees Jackie Tomlinson and our current Chair of Trustees Simon Ray, complete with rainbow tutu (very fetching Simon!). Other team members were Abbie Bentley, Pete Cliffin, Sam Harmsworth, Kathryn Hill, Brett Hill, Mark Dixon, Nigel Thornthwaite and Tony Tomlinson.

Our Communications & Fundraising Manager Amy Johnson also went along to cheer on the team but in her own words ‘wasn’t daft enough to take part’.

The team got around the 10 kilometre course in three hours, helping each other over the various challenges and showing great team spirit and camaraderie. Photos of their challenge can be found here.
There were lots of spectators on the day and lots of awareness raised by our team of Apatchy Warriors - we were even awarded the ‘Best Team Name’ prize (a case of beer) by the Total Warrior event team.

Our Surrey & Greater London Support Group Leader, Elaine, was one of our Apatchy Warriors and tells us:

“I am so grateful to Alopecia UK for organising the team and for the kind sponsorship received. I am proud to be an Apatchy Warrior. The whole experience has made me realise that I am totally accepted by others, no matter how I look. By doing something to help others I have gained new friends, a new confidence and a much greater acceptance of my alopecia” (Read Elaine’s story in full here).

A huge thank you to our sponsors KP Studio Ltd, Chambers Joinery and Sugarcraft Corner for helping to cover the team’s costs, in particular our Apatchy Warrior team t-shirts which really allowed us to raise awareness on the day.

And finally a big thank you to the whole team.  Firstly, for agreeing to take part and travelling to rural Cumbria, not the easiest part of the UK to get to!  And secondly for also tagging on a bit of fundraising and putting yourselves ‘out there’ to raise awareness! In total the team have raised approximately £2,500 for Alopecia UK, including online and offline fundraising. If you would like to sponsor the team you can find their Justgiving pages here.
